For this overlay assignment, in DCC180, I chose a photo I captured of a foggy field with a tree singled out in a sparse field. The atmosphere felt quiet, somber and introspective, so I paired it with the phrase “Even in the fog, the roots run deep.”

I used Canva to enhance legibility and mood:
- Cropped the image to emphasize the tree and leave space for they typography.
- Added a soft gradient overlay to blend distractions into the fog.
- Added an extra gradient burst to overlay some of the pine trees and changed the color to match the existing sky/fog of the photo.
- Chose a serif font (The Seasons), all in upper case, and kerned the typography for the poetic line ‘Even in the fog., also added an ‘Echo’ effect, to make the typography more ‘blurry’, to accentuate the ‘foggy’ atmosphere of the photo.
- Chose a clean sans-serif (Montserat) for the final poetic line, Your roots run deep.
- For both of the poetic lines, a color gradient was added for more interest.
- Chose the serif font (The Seasons) for the call to action: “Trust your foundation.”
- Kept the typography, monochromatic, to accentuate the sombre feeling of the original photo.
This piece reflects the idea that clarity and strength can exist even in uncertain moments.
